Why does your CI agent still stall on permission prompts?

Thắng Đoàn

When you run Claude Code in an unattended pipeline, a single permission prompt can freeze the whole turn. The permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting setting denies any tool call that would wait on a prompt, so the turn keeps going instead of hanging.

What it is

It is a Claude Code permissions setting that applies in terminal sessions, subagents and teammates. A tool call that would wait on a permission prompt is denied and the turn continues.

Applied case

A developer wiring Claude Code into a scheduled job found the run blocked for hours because a tool call sat waiting on a prompt no human would see. By enabling permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting, the blocked call is denied immediately and Claude continues with the rest of the task. The same behavior covers subagents and teammates, so parallel helpers no longer stall mid-run.

  • Deny prompt-blocked tool calls so unattended turns and subagents finish instead of hanging

When to use it

Use when you run Claude Code unattended: scripts, scheduled jobs, subagents.
Skip when you are driving interactively and want prompts to gate risky tool calls.
